Lost in "Lost"

Ok, so as many of you know, Lost it my favorite show... ever!! I watch the show every week with some of my good friends, we get together for dinner, watch the show, and talk about what we think might be going on! I love reading the message boards to see what crazy theories people come up with and the obscure details that only people with DVR and TIVO can find. So, I though it would be fun to try to post each wednesday on something Lost related!! My questions for this week are
1. What exactly is the black smoke?
2. Are the black smoke and the monster the same?
3. What is it about Locke and Eko that allows them to have such a unique experience with the smoke/monster?

Hmm...things to think about!! Happy "Losting" my friends!

#1 and #2 are quite the mystery -- they've certainly hinted that the smoke is the monster, but it may just be to throw us off track.

#3 seems to me to have a simple explanation: Locke and Eko are the only ones who have ever stood their ground against the monster and not run. The ones who have died are the ones who have run in terror -- perhaps it feeds off of fear?

Uh, Cypren is the screenname of my significant other in case you're wondering who that comment came from.

#3: I have thought that as well. It is also interesting that Locke and Eko and the most faith based/spiritual characters. I wonder if that plays a role!

It's also worth noting that the one time Locke ran in fear from the monster (when he was carrying the dynamite), it did chase him down and grab him.

As for a faith angle -- that's possible, I suppose, but I don't think it's very likely. Damon Lindelof has been quoted on more than one occasion as saying that they're trying to keep the show firmly ensconced in science fact, rather than fiction, and implied that what look like elements of the supernatural are happenstance or delusions.

If faith plays into it, it's likely just in how it shapes the characters' mental state and reactions to their environment, rather than any spiritual intervention.

I have to say I'm not as engrossed in Season 2 as I was in Season 1, but that may be because I'm not watching 20+ episodes in the span of 6 days. The thing that latched onto me last season was the sheer creepiness that they were able to spin up at a moments notice as well as the level of empathy that they could draw from the audience, connecting to the characters in such a short amount of time. Both of those haven't been as apparent this time around.

As to the questions:

1. What is the nature of the smoke? Is it conscious (or [gasp], consciousness)? Is it technological in nature, biological, some mix, or something other-worldly? It seems to be able to read or at least reflect minds. We've gotten hints that it is "just" a security device.

2. I'm thinking... highly probable. One of the things that we've seen the monster do is blow trees up out of the ground, and it seems like that's how the smoke chooses to show up. I had thought that maybe the smoke took different forms, but it seems that's not the case.

2. I'm in agreement with Cypren. Both Locke and Eko have approached it with child-like curiosity, although Eko seemed to have a better idea of what to expect. Maybe it is the Finger of God, guarding the Garden of Eden?

This season is enjoyable for 2 reasons:

a. I've been able to watch it with a cool crew of people.

2. The first season was trying to prove itself and so all of the hints, red herrings and mind-games were focused on moving the story forward. It seems like now the writers are focusing on playing games with all of the people watching and bonding over the internet. A rumor/hint is released from a trusted source and suddenly we are running around, massaging equations with 4-8-15-16-23-42, running stenography on posted images, playing sound files backwards, and generally making a fool of ourselves. Hopefully this focus enhances the show and doesn't draw the quality away (I am fearing this may happen).

i feel like this season is a letdown from last season. but, there are a whole bunch of interesting things occuring that, when explained or expanded upon, may redeem the whole season. im holding on, hoping that season two rounds out like the book "life of pi". all is redeemed in the last few pages, and hopefully, the last few episodes of this season. i mean, charlie and sawyer? tokyo rose's kidnappers? please.
